SC First Steps Releases Annual Report

Yesterday, SC Representative Rita Allison, along with Rep. Jerry Govan and Rep. Raye Felder presented the SC First Steps annual report to the SC General Assembly.

The report highlights the impact that county partnerships and First Steps 4K are having statewide – more than 28,000 children received direct services from First Steps last year, and 100% of those children had one or more risk factor that could be a barrier to school success without extra support.

A recent independent evaluation from the USC Institute for Families in Society shows that children who received services from First Steps were 74% more likely to demonstrate readiness on the SC Kindergarten Readiness Assessment than their peers.

These reports suggest that in a state where 54% (185,364) of children under age 6 live in low-income families and only 34% of students arrive at school demonstrating readiness that there is still much we can do to help families.
